# Tour of the map

> What each part of the Maps screen does.

## Left rail

The rail on the left opens drawers over the map:

| Button                     | Opens                                                                                                                 |
| -------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| QuickScout logo            | The **start drawer**: jump to a place or an RRC record, see what's on the map, and use saved and recent destinations. |
| **Recents**                | Items you've opened recently.                                                                                         |
| **My Data**                | Your own uploaded and drawn layers. See [My Data](/maps/my-data).                                                     |
| **Owner Portal**           | Properties you own. See [Owner Portal](/owners/overview).                                                             |
| **Projects**               | Find and switch projects (Enterprise).                                                                                |
| **Watchlist**              | The active project's watchlist (Enterprise).                                                                          |
| **Production**             | Look up production for a lease, operator or field.                                                                    |
| **Operators** / **Fields** | Put operator or field outlines on the map.                                                                            |
| **Alerts**                 | Your alerts. See [Alerts](/tools/alerts).                                                                             |
| **Profile**                | Your account. See [Sign in](/get-started/sign-in#your-account-menu).                                                  |

## Top bar

* **Search**: find wells, leases, operators, fields and places. See [Search](/maps/search).
* **Place name**: the county you're looking at. Hover it for a summary of what's in view, and to [ask about the view](/maps/ask-the-map).
* **Production counter**: oil (bbl/d) and gas (mcf/d) produced by the wells in view. Hover it to see the top operators and fields.
* **Project pill**: appears when a project is active (Enterprise).

## Right side controls

Hover each icon to open its panel:

* **Layers**: turn map layers and heatmaps on and off. See [Layers & heatmaps](/maps/layers).
* **Basemap**: choose the background map, including Satellite and Topo.
* **Filters**: show only certain well types (Oil Well, Gas Well, Permit…) or wellbores (**Vertical** / **Horizontal**). The icon lights up while a filter is on.
* **Settings**: color theme, well popups, well icon size, well labels, and [offline copies](/maps/offline).

Bottom right are zoom buttons and a **ruler** for measuring distance. Click to add points, double-click to finish, and press **Esc** to stop.

## Data tables

The handle on the map's right edge, labeled **Tables**, opens the data tables beside the map. Drag it to resize. See [Data tables](/maps/data-panel).

## Clicking and hovering

* **Hover a well** to see its operator, lease, field, daily volumes and status. Click the API to copy it.
* **Click a well** to open its record. See [Wells, leases & operators](/maps/records).
* **Shift + drag** a box to compare up to 1,000 wells side by side.

  Prefer popups on click instead of hover? Change **Settings** → **Well Popup** to **On Click**.
